When Apple released macOS Catalina, it also made a change to the layout in the Mail app. It has since updated the classic layout and you can no longer select it within your Mail Preferences. One thing you can change, however, is where you see the previews and you can also change whether or not you want the column layout in the app.
In this guide, we will show you how to edit the layout of your inbox in the Mail app on your Mac. Before we proceed, however, check out the different Mail preferences.
Different Mail Preferences
When you go to the Settings of your Mail app by tapping on Preferences from the menu bar in the Mail app, and go to the Viewing tab where the classic layout used to be, you will notice that it is no longer there. The options that use to be with the layout have disappeared as well. However, you can access these options from the menu bar.
If you would like the “To/CC” label or contact photos to be displayed in the message list, simply click View from the menu bar and mark whichever options you want to be displayed. Note that if you use the column layout is enabled on your device, you will not be able to use the “Show Contact Photo” option. Read on to learn more.
How to Change Your Inbox Layout
Now, if you do not like the classic layout and you want to make slight adjustments, below are some options you can edit to your taste.
Change the preview location
In the Mail app, click View and then click the “Show Side Preview” option from the Menu bar. Now, your familiar preview will appear on the right side of the mail instead of at the bottom.
Change the Column Layout
However, if you are fine with your previews at the bottom of the screen and you don’t want it to appear at the top, you can easily get this done as well. Simply click View and then click Column Layout to uncheck it.
Now, you should see the number of lines you choose in the Mail Preferences just as it was before.
Whichever layout you would like to use in the Mail app on Mac, you are only a few clicks away from making it happen. So if you’ve been a little lost with how to do it since you updated your Mac to macOS Catalina, hopefully, this short guide comes in handy.
